Alain Chevalier was chairman of champagne maker Moet Hennessy who merged it into luxury goods giant Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton (LVMH).

Early life

Born on August 16, 1931 in Algiers, French Algeria, where his family has been living since 1880, studied law and political science before joining the ENA, from which he left in 1959. At first an auditor at the Court of Auditors, he held various positions in ministries (Algerian affairs, national education, to industry) before leaving the administration to go into the private sector.[1]

Business career

In 1970 Alain Chevalier took over the general management of the champagne house Moët et Chandon. He then transformed it to make it one of the leaders of the international champagne market, merging it with Hennessy.

The company entered a new dimension in 1987: Alain Chevalier, Bernard Arnault and Henry Racamier, then president of Louis Vuitton, were the architects of the creation of a new luxury group, LVMH, which by 2018 was the leading luxury group in the world.[1][2] But this marriage was the end of the career Chevalier. He never owned the slightest share, whether at Moët or later at LVMH. Absent from the ownership of LVMH, he did not succeed in stopping the progress of Bernard Arnault, who gradually acquired whole sections of the company, until he became the main shareholder. Arnault, the was, as of as of June 2022, the third richest person in the world.[3]
