British Avaaz.

38 Degrees is a British not-for-profit political activism organisation which describes itself as "progressive" and claims to "campaign for fairness, defend rights, promote peace, preserve the planet and deepen democracy in the UK". In October 2013, it was reported to claim 1.9 million UK members.

38 Degrees takes its name from "the angle at which snowflakes come together to form an avalanche".[1]

At launch they announced that they were inspired by Avaaz.

Funding

The NGO is keen to stress it is "independent and people-powered – we don’t take any money from government, political parties or big business" and "is funded by small donations...fivers and tenners...from hundreds of thousands of members". However, its funding, at £5,541,682 in 2019, suggests that the bulk of its money comes from cutouts, foundations that work as middlemen for deeper interests.

Back in 2009 as the organisation was being set up, 38 Degrees accepted "some money" from the Isvara Foundation, The Funding Network, the Andrew Wainwright Reform Trust, the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation, the Joseph Rowntree Charitable Trust, the Barrow Cadbury Fund and UnLtd.[2]
