Annelise "Anna" Firth (born 1967) is a British politician, serving as the Conservative Party Member of Parliament for Southend West after winning the 2022 Southend West by-election caused by the killing of David Amess.[1]
Early life
Anna Firth originally comes from Leigh-on-Sea in Essex, obtained a law degree from Durham University and worked for a time as a barrister.[2]
Political career
Anna Firth was a district councillor on Sevenoaks District Council for the area covering Brasted, Chevening, Sundridge and Ide Hill from May 2011 to her resignation on 7 January 2022.[3]
Firth stood in the parliamentary constituency of Erith and Thamesmead in 2015 and Canterbury in the UK/2019 General Election, losing to Labour Party's Rosie Duffield by 1,836 votes.
She later stood as the Conservative Party candidate in the 2022 Southend West by-election held after the killing of David Amess. Following the precedent set in 2016 after the murder of Jo Cox and the ensuing by-election in Batley and Spen, no major parties contested the seat.[4] Firth lived in Kent; however, she announced her intention to move in with her family in the constituency following her selection.[5]
