Education
He has a degree in Economics from the Technical University of Lisbon.
Career
A business consultant, Luís Amado began his professional career as a secondary school teacher.[1] Later he was an auditor in the Madeira Regional section of the Court of Auditors.[1]
He was also a visiting professor at Georgetown University and is a visiting professor at the Nova School of Business and Economics.
Political and governmental career
An activist and member of the Secretariat of the Socialist Party (PS), Luís Amado was elected a deputy to the Regional Legislative Assembly of Madeira and the national parliament.
He held for the first time governmental functions in governments headed by António Guterres. He began as Assistant Secretary of State for Internal Administration and later became Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs.
In 2005, following the victory of the PS in the 2005 legislative elections, he joined the government of José Sócrates, as Minister of Foreign Affairs. In the following Government of Socrates, he assumed the function of Minister of National Defense.
He decided to leave political life with the calling of the early legislative elections of June 5, 2011.
Board positions
He is chairman of the Board of Directors of Banif Financial Group, in January 2018 he was appointed chairman of the general and Supervisory Board (chairman) of Energias de Portugal, replacing Eduardo Catroga.[2]
