Career

Prior to joining Koç University in 2005, she worked for the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System. She was promoted to associate professorship in 2008 and professorship in 2017. From 2016 onwards she is the director of Koç University-TÜSİAD Economic Research Forum. Demiralp’s research is in monetary and macroeconomic policy and applied econometrics. She focuses on policy oriented research questions, particularly in the area of central banking.

Over the past decade, Demiralp had extensive interactions with several central banks including the Federal Reserve, European Central Bank and the Central Bank of Türkiye. She worked as a consultant for the ECB.[3]

Between 2013-2019 she wrote weekly articles for Milliyet, which is one of the major Turkish newspapers. She also writes for BBC Turkish News[1] and the Economist.

Covid

In 2021, she was the co-author of a "study" of the "economic consequences of not vaccinating the entire world’s population against COVID-19"[4]. The "study" was commissioned by the International Chamber of Commerce, and concluded that "equitable distribution of vaccines" is in every country’s economic interest. "Clearly, all economies are connected," said Demiralp. "No economy will be fully recovered unless the other economies are recovered."[5]
