He attended the 2010 Bilderberg meeting, and the 2019 Bilderberg meeting as he retired.
Education
Dieter Zetsche was born when his father Herbert was working on a dam project in Turkey. The family returned to Germany in 1955. From 1971 to 1976 studied electrical engineering at the University of Karlsruhe, graduating as an engineer. From 1976 Zetsche worked in the research department of the former Daimler-Benz AG. in 1981, he became an assistant to the development management in the Commercial Vehicles division, and in 1982 he received his doctorate in engineering sciences at the University of Paderborn.
Career
From 1984 he was responsible for the coordination of development activities abroad at Daimler-Benz in the Commercial vehicle development management. Dieter Zetsche was a member of the Board of Management of DaimlerChrysler AG since 1998 and President and Managing Director of DaimlerChrysler Corporation ("Chrysler Group") in the United States since 2000. After years of losses, the company had managed to get back into the black under his leadership.[1]
Zetsche succeeded Jürgen Schrempp as CEO of the company on January 1, 2006.
Zetsche was the main influence behind the demerger of Daimler and Chrysler in 2007, which ended in the newly formed Daimler AG.
In April 2012, it became known that the value of Zetsche's pension entitlements promised so far was 29.6 million euros. According to a calculation by the Spiegel, Zetsche thus occupies the top position among all incumbent board members in Germany.[2]
In September 2018, it was announced that Zetsche intends to hand over his post as CEO to Ola Källenius at the end of May 2019 and to take over the chairmanship of the Supervisory Board as the successor of Manfred Bischoff in 2021. On May 22, 2019, Zetsche handed over the position at the Daimler Annual General Meeting.[3] The demand of some Anglo-Saxon investors and German fund companies for a "true" new start then forced Zetsche to withdraw his commitment to take over the chairmanship of the Supervisory Board again. In an interview, he stressed that in the interests of the company, he would refrain from a fight vote.
On May 23, 2019, Dieter Zetsche was elected Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the tourism group TUI.[4] Zetsche also took up a position on the advisory board of the discounter Aldi Süd.[5]
