God's Gun Speaks in Palestine

During the past three weeks a new terror has stalked the streets of Palestine - children dropping dead or being horribly wounded by bullets which appear to make little or no sound, but nonetheless inflict terrible injuries on their victims. Consider the following, reported by MER journalist Sam Kiley:

"Easily visible in a white T-shirt, Mr Afaneh stepped from behind a car to whir his slingshot and take aim at Israeli soldiers 100 yards away. There was no sound of a shot, but he spun around, falling on his back. "I didn't hear a thing. I didn't feel much, I just fell over," he said in Ramallah's central hospital where he was treated for a wound to his pelvis, where the bullet lodged. hosni Atari, the doctor who treated him, said he had never seen the results of the new Israeli weapon before. Hollow-nosed bullets opened like an umbrella on impact, spun about, chewing up internal organs, and seldom left an exit wound. The long-barrel .22 rifle was deadly even at long range and had the advantage of never revealing the sniper's nest. 'These are intended to cause the maximum amount of damage to a person,' Dr Atari said. He treated seven such patients yesterday."

Palestinian confusion is understandable, because until now the only silenced .22 round they have been exposed to is that fired by the little Ruger 10/22, used by Jewish soldiers for "Riot Control". The 10/22 is only intended for killing silently at close range, its tiny 45-grain bullet travelling at about 1000 feet per second. Yes it will kill, but only if the target is hit in a vital organ, say the brain or heart. What the 10/22 cannot do under any circumstances is cause the savage injuries currently being inflicted on Palestinian children, including ruptured livers, kidneys and so on. But because the Ruger is the only "silent" .22 calibre weapon they have seen used against them, the Palestinians mistakenly reason it must be responsible for these new and horrible injuries

The real reason for the carnage is a weapon known among specialist snipers as "God's Gun", technically the Barrett M82A1, an American long range sniping rifle manufactured in .50 caliber (12.7 x 99-mm), normally used against light armor targets at ranges of up to 2,000 yards. Then someone somewhere decided that if a smaller bullet could in some way be matched to the neck of the .50 caliber cartridge case, the result would be an extremely effective man killer with minute-of-arc accuracy at 1,200 yards

This was achieved with a .30 caliber (.7.62-mm) bullet being saboted into the .50 calibre cartridge neck, designated M903. The sabot is a circular plastic "ring" which holds the bullet in a central position, while its outer edge grips the rifling in the barrel. When fired, sabot and bullet spin together until they exit the barrel, at which point the lightweight plastic sabot falls away, leaving the bullet to continue on to the target at extreme velocity, in this case 3,985 feet per second as opposed to 2,750 feet per second for a standard .30 caliber sniper rifle.

Another someone somewhere (rumoured to be in Israel) reasoned that if an even smaller (.22) bullet was saboted into the .50 caliber cartridge case, the result would be a hypersonic round with minute-of-arc accuracy at 800 yards, capable of causing exactly those injuries described by Doctor Hosni Atan in Ramallah. To better gauge the relative power of these awesome rounds, take a look at at the picture below. At top of the photo is a standard Browning .50 caliber ball round, and at bottom a standard .30 caliber. In the middle is the saboted M903 with the full .50 caliber charge available to propel it from the barrel. The difference is obvious. Imagine the little .22 bullet fitted in the sabot instead of the .30 caliber and you get a feel for this monstrous round, which leaves the barrel at a staggering (estimated) 5,400 feet per second. The victim might hear a small "crack" from the low mass supersonic bullet, but will hear no "bang" as the bullet strikes, because the sound of the M82A1's muzzle blast is more than half a mile away. God help the children.

Judging by the press releases, it appears the Palestinians are being deliberately tricked into believing that their children are being shot at close range with the Ruger 10/22, so are looking in the wrong place for the Jewish snipers. This is understandable, because few would believe that any .22 caliber weapon could cause such horrific injuries at 800 yards. It can and has been doing so for the past three weeks in the hands of snipers like the female Jewish solidier below, who seems to think that shooting Palestinian children through the head and neck is a bit of a joke

The only way for the Palestinians to limit this carnage is to stop thinking "Ruger 10/22 at 50 yards", and start thinking "Barrett 50/22 at 800 yards". As a first step, military authorities should visit the site of each of the known killings, and tabulate all line-of=sight firing lanes (600 to 800 yards) in clear view of where each victim fell. From there it is a matter of triangulation. Several victims may have been shot from a single sniper nest, while others will have been shot from a second or even third. Remember though, good sniper nests are very hard to find and they will be used again. Once triangulation of the line-of-sight firing lanes is complete, my suggestion is that Hamas (or similar) should go in discreetly one night and execute these barbarians. Shooting unarmed children is not an act of war, it is gross and inexcusably obscene behavior

Perhaps the best solution would be for Palestine to quietly acquire a few dozen M82A1s of its own for effective defensive purposes. As an American Special Forces soldier once wrote:

"The M82A1 sniper rifle is the worst nightmare of anyone with an enemy who owns one."

Footnote: Since this web page was first posted, there have been many comments on the internet  that the M82A1 is a "Secret Jewish" or "Secret Israeli" weapon. This is partly misleading, because in America the Barret M82A1 in civilian form can be purchased by just about anyone with $6,000 to spare. Not so the ammunition however. Recent American legislation prohibits the US Armed Forces from selling surplus .50 caliber ball rounds, and the M903 sabot round has never been available for civilian purchase. About the only "secret" bit is the hyper velocity "50/22" round, believed to be manufactured exclusively within Israel.
