On the deliberate abuse, both physical and mental, of prisoners. The mushrooming of euphemisms such as 'detainees', 'enemy combatants', 'enhanced interrogation' is a tactic to try to confuse an issue which is morally and legally clear. The main purpose of torture is not extraction of valuable information, since such information is inevitably unreliable, but is the fabrication of excuses for continuing expenditure on the war machine and the promotion of fear both at home and abroad.
