Tekin Ariburun was a Turkish officer and politician. He attended the 1959 Bilderberg as Commander of the Turkish Air Force. He retired in 1960 because he was against the military coup. Briefly acting President of Turkey in 1973.

Early life

Arıburun was the son of Hüseyin Avni Bey, the commander of the 57th Regiment, who made a legendary reputation in the Dardanelles Wars and stopped the advance of the ANZAC corps towards Conkbayırı on April 25, 1915. He took the surname Arıburun ('the point purified by martyrs' blood') upon Atatürk's request, because of his father, who was martyred in Çanakkale (Gallipoli).

Career

He graduated from the Military Academy in 1925 and the Air Force Academy in 1927 and became a pilot officer. In 1935 he promoted to staff position. He was promoted to brigadier general in 1950 and full general in 1959 and was appointed Air Force Commander. After the 1960 Turkish coup d'etat, he was ex officio retired because he was against the coup. He was elected Istanbul Senator from the Justice Party in the 1961 elections.

He also served as the President of the Senate between 1970-1977. In 1973, he became the Presidential candidate of the Justice Party against Chief of General Staff Faruk Gürler, who wanted to be President. In 1973, Tekin Ariburun became Acting President of Turkey, replacing Cevdet Sunay. Arıburun held various positions abroad; He was air attaché in Berlin and Washington, and commanded the NATO Defense Academy in Paris. He represented Turkey at various international meetings.

Tekin Arıburun, who passed away on August 12, 1993; He was a soldier and politician who was fluent in English, German, French, Italian and Hungarian, wrote poetry, played the piano and composed songs. His compositions include the Air Force anthem.
