António Guterres (born 30 April 1949) is a Portuguese politician and diplomat who is the Secretary-General-designate of the United Nations.
Guterres was Prime Minister of Portugal from 1995 to 2002, as leader of the Socialist Party. He also served as President of the Socialist International from 1999 to 2005.[1]
He was the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees from June 2005 to December 2015.
In October 2016 the United Nations General Assembly elected António Guterres by acclamation to become the next UN Secretary-General, succeeding the retiring Ban Ki-moon.[2]
