A four part investigation into the Jill Dando murder by Richard Hall that covers many lesser known aspects of the surrounding circumstances at the point of her murder

Murder

Jill Dando was shot dead with a single bullet to the head. The theory first adopted by UK police "was that of a crazed opportunistic individual".[1] Many different theories have subsequently been presented.[2]

UK Police carried out about 2,500 interviews and took around 1,000 statements.[2]

"Lone nut"?

Barry Lindsey, the last person to see Jill Dando alive, claimed in 2013 that detectives ignored his evidence, stating "We are looking at a local guy over this murder. He is called Barry George".[3] George, a local man with a history of sex offences was charged on May 28, 2000 and found guilty. He freed in 2008 on appeal.[4] In 2010 he was denied compensation for "wrongful imprisonment" and again at an appeal in 2013 on grounds he was “not innocent enough”.[5]

Yugoslav War

At the time of the murder, the UK was involved in a extensive covert and open campaign in support of independence for Kosovo, then a part of Serbia. Soon after the murder, some commentators identified the possibility of a Yugoslav or Serb connection, and this was then integrated in the media campaign to promote the war. The origin of the theory turned out to be a viewer's letter recalled by Allasonne Lewis, Dando's agent, complaining that a Disasters Emergency Committee appeal fronted by Dando had been one-sided. It contained no hint of threat, but the story that reached the media was that it was extremely menacing[6]

VIPaedophile

Full article: Rated 3/5 VIPaedophile

It was reported in 2014 that Jill Dando had received reports of a paedophile ring in the BBC and passed a file on the matter to senior management in the mid-1990s, and that some female workmates had told her that they had been groped or assaulted. However it turned out that that "no one wanted to know" and an investigation was never carried out.[7][8]

BBC Documentary

"To mark the 20th anniversary of Jill Dando’s death, the BBC is broadcasting a documentary that will tell the full story behind one of Britain’s most high-profile unsolved killings."[9]
